Early Detection and Screenings

Early detection of diseases through awareness and appropriate screenings can save lives. Henry Medical Center is dedicated to the promotion of early detection and providing screenings, as well as, awareness programs throughout the year.
Various awareness campaigns offered at specified times of the year include:
- Diabetes Awareness Screenings
- Skin Cancer Awareness
- Colon Cancer Awareness and colorectal kit promotion
- Stroke & Heart Awareness with risk screening
- Osteoporosis Awareness/Bone Density Screenings
To further promote early detection, Henry Medical Center collaborates with various churches, businesses, and civic groups to offer on-site screenings such as cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, bone density, height and weight with Body Mass Index and abdominal girth. Screenings may be free or fee-based and are offered according to availability of resources and staff.
Some annual screenings and education events held by Henry Medical Center:
- Heart Healthy Screenings (February)
- Prostate Screening (September)
- Breast Health Connection (October)
Cardiovascular disease remains the top cause of death in the United States as well as the Henry County community. An annual education and screening event is held each February to promote the prevention of heart disease.
To promote early detection of prostate cancer, Henry Medical Center coordinates an annual prostate screening with local physicians each September. The 2010 FREE Prostate Screening will be held Saturday, September 11 between 9 A.M. and 2 P.M. in the hospital’s Foundation Education Center. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and second leading cause of cancer death in men. According to the most recent data, for all men with prostate cancer, the relative 5-year survival rate is nearly 100%. Candidates for the Henry Medical Center free prostate screening must be male, age 40 years or older and must not have had a prostate screening within the past year. If you have blood in the urine, pain on urination, or difficulty urinating, you are not a candidate for this screening and should see your physician. Prostate cancer screening is an individual decision that men of any age should make upon discussing both the risks and benefits of screening with their physician. Men who wish to be screened during Henry Medical Center’s free prostate screening on September 11 will have both a Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and a digital rectal exam (DRE). For more information on prostate screening visit http://www.urologyhealth.org, or download the information brochure here. Pre-registration is required. Henry Medical Center strives to reduce the number of deaths due to breast cancer in the Henry County community through its early detection Breast Health Connection program held every October. The program includes an interview upon arrival to determine which mammogram screening source is most appropriate for each participant. The 2010 event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26.
